How to Draw a Hand – Step by Step Guide
Step-by-step instructions on how to draw a human hand, broken down into 9 easy and simple steps with accompanying illustrations to make the process easier to follow.
When drawing the outline of a person’s palm for this exercise, remember to use a gentle grip and light strokes. The top part of the figure should be slightly diagonal, while the bottom part should be rounded.
Step 2 — Draw the Little Finger
On the upper leftmost side of the palm, draw an elongated inverted U-shaped line that forms the little finger, which is the smallest finger that is directly connected to the palm.
Step 3 — Next, Draw the Ring Finger
On the right side of the first inverted U-shaped line we drew in the previous step, draw another inverted U-shaped line to form the ring finger next to the little finger.
Step 4 — Then, Draw the Middle Finger
The middle finger is the tallest of the five fingers, so draw an upside down U-shaped curve right beside the ring finger to make it. After this step, the palm should have three fingers attached to it, so keep that in mind when drawing the fingers.
Step 5 — Now, Draw the Index Finger
Draw a finger on the rightmost part of the top of the palm to form the index finger of the hand; all that’s left is to draw the thumb in the next step. Keep in mind that your index finger should be as tall as your ring finger.
Step 6 — Afterwards, Draw the Thumb
The thumb should be affixed on the right side edge of the palm, with a slightly wider form than the other four fingers, as the final touch to a child’s hand. Now, all five fingers on the hand are complete.
Step 7 — Draw the Wrist of the Hand
Draw two short vertical lines right underneath the palm to create the wrist; the wider the gap between the lines, the wider the wrist should be in comparison to the rest of your body.
Step 8 — Add Lines on the Palm and the Fingers
Draw a few lines on the palm and one line for each finger to create the lines, which are a physical feature that we develop even before birth. Make sure the lines are thin to look natural.
Step 9 — Now, Refine the Hand Drawing
Next, erase all parts of the palm outline on each of the five fingers and the wrist. Coloring is optional, but we recommend it to make your artwork more colorful. To make a skin tone color, simply mix the colors white, yellow, red, and blue together.
