Feel free to use whatever tools and materials you want, but I highly recommend drawing with a pencil when you first start. Here is a video version of the tutorial if you want to see it being drawn in real time.
Step 2. Smaller Circle
Draw a circle the same size as the flower’s center, then a curved line from the second circle to the outer circle. Sunflowers have pointed petals, so laying down a good foundation will make this much easier.
Let’s make a stem for the flower by drawing two vertical lines down from the center. Fill in the two large spaces with petals that almost meet at the core. Because this empty space is larger, we’ll see more of this petal.
How do you draw and paint sunflowers?
- For the center of the sunflower, trace a 6u201d circle in the lower left corner of your canvas and paint it burnt umber.
- Draw the petals out with a #8 Round Bush and cadmium yellow hue.
- Paint the bottom of the petals with cadmium yellow hue double loaded with a tiny bit of burnt umber.
What color is Sunflower?
Now, using pure cadmium yellow, lightly paint over each ENTIRE petal, bringing the warm sunny yellow sunflower color to the flower. Try to let some of the orange show through by “streaking” the yellow with your brush.
Why is sunflower painting famous?
The sunflower paintings had a special meaning for Van Gogh: they communicated ‘gratitude,’ he wrote, and he hung the first two in the room of his friend, the painter Paul Gauguin, who came to live with him in the Yellow House for a while.
