How to Draw Anime Hands Step by Step
This tutorial shows how to draw anime and manga hands in various positions. Drawing anime hands is a little easier than drawing realistic hands, but the overall structure and proportions are basically the same. For drawing arms, see How to Draw Anime Arms.
Drawing Anime Hands With an Open Palm
If you’re a beginner, start by drawing the hand with the palm open and fingers extended to get a sense of proportions; you can also refer to photographs, other drawings, or your own hands for inspiration.
Step 1 – Drawing the Palm & Thumb Base
Drawing anime hands palm and thumb base First, draw a rough shape for the palm, then draw a rough shape for the thumb base to get its proportions in relation to the palm.
Step 2 – Analyzing the Proportions of the Hand
Drawing anime hands palm and thumb proportions Study the proportions of the fingers: the fingers (fully extended) and the palm of the hand should be roughly the same length, and the tip of the thumb drawn at a 45 degree angle to the hand should reach just slightly below the knuckle bone of the index finger.
Step 3 – Drawing the Fingers
Draw the outer shapes of the fingers and thumb on the drawing of anime hands.
Step 4 – Cleaning Up & Finalizing the Drawing
Draw a thicker line for the overall shape of the hand and a thinner line for the details. Clean up the drawing and add details such as lines and small wrinkles along the palm and fingers, which will generally be positioned around the finger/thumb joints.
Step 1 – Drawing Side View Palm & Thumb Base
Drawing anime hands side view palm and thumb base Draw the overall shape of the hand without the thumb or fingers first, then draw the shape of the base of the thumb.
Step 2 – Drawing Thumb & Fingers
Drawing anime hands side thumb index and middle finger For the purposes of the tutorial, I’ll fully draw out the structure of all the fingers (including parts that won’t be visible in the final drawing) for you to use as a reference; you don’t have to do this (especially if you’re drawing on paper), but you should be aware of the positioning of the invisible parts of the fingers to avoid mistakes.
Step 3 – Drawing Other & Fingers
Step 2: Draw the side ring and pinky finger of an anime hand.
Step 4 – Cleaning Up & Finalizing the Side View Drawing
Cleaning up the drawing and adding details like small wrinkles around the joints of the fingers and thumb, as well as the fingernails (for more on drawing fingernails, see: How to Draw Fingernails 6 Different Ways).

Step 1 – Drawing Anime Fist Thumb & Finger Proportions

Drawing Anime Male and Female Hands
Male and female anime hands are often drawn in the same way, but there are a few differences when drawing close ups of the hands. Female hands are usually more slender and curvy with long fingernails, whereas male hands are usually larger in comparison.
Simplified Anime Hands
When drawing hands for something like a manga, you don’t always need to make a detailed drawing; sometimes just a basic outline of the main feature of the hand is enough. For example, if you’re drawing a background character, you don’t need to draw their fingernails.
It takes a lot of practice to be able to draw properly structured hands in various views, and depending on your skill level as an artist, your drawings may not turn out the way you want them to at first. Don’t get discouraged; hands are difficult to draw, and if you draw on a regular basis, you can improve.
What was the first cartoon?
Fantasmagorie, the world’s first fully animated cartoon created by Emile Cohl in the traditional hand-drawn animation style, was released on August 17, 1908, by the Gaumont company in Paris.
Is a fist a hand?
The closed fist is used to punch the lower phalanges against a surface or pound with the little-finger side of the hand’s heel; the open fist is used to knock with the middle knuckle of the middle finger.
