How to Draw Female Anime Eyes Tutorial
This tutorial explains how to draw female anime and manga style eyes; there are many other eye drawing tutorials on AnimeOutline, including one on how to draw male anime eyes: How to Draw Male Anime.
Female Anime Eye Specifics (Before You Start Drawing)
Anime eyes are almost always drawn larger and wider than real eyes, especially in female characters, who frequently have larger and wider eyes. Female anime eyes also have more prominent eyelashes (longer, thicker, and more of them) than male anime eyes.
Step 1 – Draw the Outer Shape of the Eye
Start by drawing the outer shape of the eye, which in this case is the eyelids/eyelashes. For more information on drawing eyelashes, see How to Draw Animate Eyelash Step-by-Step.
Step 2 – Draw the Shape of the Iris
The iris of a female anime eye is similar to that of a human eye, but it is vertically stretched (in comparison to a real eye). It is essentially an oval, with the top and bottom hidden by the eyelids, rather than the eyes’ eyelids as in real life.
Step 3 – Draw the Pupil
Female anime eye pupils are made up of a smaller pupil that traces the shape of the iris.
Step 4 – Indicate Dark Area at Top of Iris
Make sure both sides are aligned and that the curve is nice and smooth; the reason for drawing it all the way through is to eliminate any lines that overlap the pupil.
Step 5 – Draw the Primary Reflection
Draw the main reflection area from the main light source, such as an indoor light bulb, a fire, or the sun. In anime, you can usually just leave the reflection white and give it a very generalized shape, such as a circle or oval.
Step 6 – Draw the Secondary Reflection
When viewed from the front, the female anime eye has a secondary light reflection, which is the part of the eye where the main light source reflects off of a surface. It is smaller than the primary reflection and makes the pupil appear more bluish-green.
Step 7 – Shade The Different Area of the Eye
If you’re drawing on paper, leave the reflections white, then shade the eyelids and pupil black, then shade the iris grey or whatever color you want the eyes to be.
Step 8 – Add the Outer Top Eyelid Eyelashes
Steps 1u20137: Add eyelashes to the outer and inner corners of the eye. You could stop at step seven and have a perfectly normal anime eye, but since this tutorial focuses on female eyes, we’ll add some eyelashes for emphasis. The eyelashes (real eyelashes) fan out around the eyelids in a sort of fan shape.
Step 9 – Add the Bottom Eyelashes
To complete the drawing of a female anime eye, add some eyelashes to the outer and inner bottom corners of the eye.
Color & Gradient
Instead of just shading the eye with greys, you can color it and add some gradient effects for added realism.
Drawing Both Eyes
If you’re drawing both eyes at once, draw each step for each eye before moving on to the next; see our Beginner’s Guide to Drawing Anime for an explanation of why this is so, as well as other useful drawing tips.
Placing Anime Eyes on the Head Vertically
Female anime eyes are important to draw, especially for younger female characters. To place the eyes vertically, divide the head in half; note that real eyes are usually drawn directly on the line, whereas anime eyes are drawn lower down on the head.
Spacing Anime Eyes
To place the eyes out, simply leave a space between them equal to the width of one eye, as if you were sitting with your eyes open.
