How to Draw Male Anime & Manga Eyes – AnimeOutline
This tutorial walks you through the steps of drawing male anime or manga eyes, as well as some of the more common elements of the style.
Specifics Common to Male Anime Eyes
Older male characters’ eyes are drawn narrower than younger characters’ eyes, so this tutorial will focus on drawing the eyes of a young adult male character (around the age of 20-30). For drawing female anime eyes, see How to Draw Female Anime Eyes.
Placing Anime Male Eyes on the Head
Drawing anime eyes on the head To draw anime eyes on the head, draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that line. Real eyes would be drawn directly on that line or even above it, but anime eyes are drawn lower down. If you’re drawing squinted eyes, you may want to draw them a little further down from the halfway line as the top of the eyes will squint.
Drawing Anime Male Eyes
Draw the eyebrows after the eyes, usually slightly wider than the eyes. Optionally, draw a hint of the upper part of the eyelids. More realistic anime styles tend to show eyelids, while the more simplified don’t.
Drawing a Male Anime Eye Step by Step
Anime male eyes step-by-step breakdown If you’re going to draw both eyes, do so at the same time, drawing each step for each eye before moving on to the next.
Step 1 – Shape of The Eye
Anime male eye outer shape Draw the overall shape of the eye, with the eyelashes serving as the outline. As previously stated, male characters’ eyes (especially older males’ eyes) tend to be narrower than female characters’ eyes.
Step 2 – Iris
The pupils in anime are frequently drawn as ovals (though they can also be drawn round like real eyes), and you can see that much of the pupil is obscured by the eyelids in this example.
Step 3 – Pupil
Draw the pupil of an anime male’s eye in the shape of the iris, but smaller and narrower.
Step 4 – Shadow
There will usually be a shadow or a reflection of the eyelashes at the top of the eyes, making the top darker; you can indicate this area to shade it later.
Step 5 – Combined Pupil & Shadow Shape
The pupil and the top shadow/reflection can be shaded in with the same color, so they can be treated as one shape in an anime male eye.
Step 6 – Main Reflection
The main reflection of the main light source; the shape of the reflection will be determined by the shape of the light source (the sun or in indoor lighting, for example), but you can generally draw a round or oval shape.
Step 7 – Secondary Reflection
The light emitted by the reflection of the main light source (for example, the sun reflecting off a shiny surface) is usually the source of secondary reflection in the eye.
Step 8 – Pupil Shape
Draw a darker line to indicate the pupil, as the rest will be guidelines that will fade away when shaded. Anime male eye details
Step 9 – Shading & Color
Anime male eye Shade and color the eye, using the same color for the pupil and shadow as previously mentioned. Keep the reflections white unless the light source is a specific color (for example, a red sunrise).
If you want to draw different styles of male anime eyes, simply change the shape or leave out certain steps/parts of the eye for more simplified styles. For examples of different styles of male anime eyes, see:Different Style Male Anime Eyes.
