How to Draw an Anime Girl’s Head and Face
Most female anime characters have big eyes, a small mouth, nose, and chin, and a fairly round face. If drawing with pencil and paper, make very light lines for the first parts of the tutorial.
Step 1 – Drawing The Head
See Beginner Guide to Choosing Colors When Drawing Anime for more information on how to draw anime.
Step 2 – Drawing the Ears
To place the ears, first draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head, then another line between that and the chin, and then draw the ears between these two lines. For the side view placement of the ears, they will be slightly more towards the back of the head than the front, because the ears will be covered by the hair in a later step.
Step 3 – Drawing the Eyes
To place the eyes on the head, draw the eyes directly below the vertical line used to place the top part of the ears. Because the height of anime eyes varies depending on style and character type, there is no one-size-fits-all way to place the bottom portion. If drawing both views at once, make sure that the bottom portions of the eyes in both vies are the same.
Step 4 – Drawing the Nose
Anime girl nose drawing As previously stated, the nose should be placed between the horizontal halfway point of the face and the bottom of the chin. In the front view, the nose can be drawn as a simple dot; in the side view, an anime nose is usually small and pointy. For more examples of anime noses in various views, see:How to Draw Anime and Manga Noses.
Step 5 – Drawing the Mouth
To mouth is a little bit trickier to place because you’ll need to first get the position of the bottom lip, which is often not drawn in the front view of the characters in anime and manga. The bottom lip will be positioned between the nose and the bottom of the chin. Draw the mouth itself slightly above the chin.
Step 6 – Drawing The Hair
Add the hair. Keep in mind that the hair will cover some of the other features of the character’s face, but it’s still a good idea to draw them out anyway, especially since they’ll be visible if you choose to draw a different hair style. You can erase the parts that are covered up by the hair once you’re done.
Step 7 – Drawing the Smaller Details of the Face & Finishing the Line Drawing
Anime girl line drawing At this stage, you can erase the parts of the face that are hidden by the hair and add smaller details to the eyes, such as the eyelashes, pupils, and highlights, as well as shade in the eyelashes and add more details to the hair. When drawing the eyes, lightly outline the highlights (reflections of light) with very light lines so that if you shade the eye, the highlights (reflections of light) will show through.
Step 8 – Applying Shading
Anime uses what is known as “Cel” style shading (basically shading with no gradients), which makes shading fairly fast and easy. The way the shading is applied will be determined by two things: the areas that are naturally darker and the areas that have shadows cast on them.
Shade the pupils and the upper area of the iris even darker. For more detailed examples of shading hair, see:How to Shade Anime Hair Step by StepLeave a white area in the hair for the highlight. For more on drawing these, see:Different Ways to Draw Anime Hair Highlights
In Shadow Areas
The way shadows are cast is determined by the light source; for the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll assume very “generalized” lighting conditions in which shadows are cast downwards: Forehead u2013 from the hair Eyelids u2013 due to them being indented in the head (less light reaches) Top of the Eyes u2013 from the eyelashes (somewhat optional these lashes)
