How to Draw a Fish
Learn how to draw a rainbow trout using the example of a fish. Fish are relatively easy to draw, making them an excellent choice for beginners. I’ll show you a simple way to design a typical fish; you can always add new features or change the proportions.
What You Will Need
Start with a HB graphite pencil, an eraser, and some drawing paper.
Step 1
There’s no need for a ruler; just a pencil will suffice.
Step 4
To give the impression of depth and movement under water, I join the body and the tail fin, forming the tail’s contours.
Step 5
I’ve drawn a line around the area of the fish’s head and added a curved line for the gill cover in this image of a fish. All fish species have different proportions, but let’s agree on the length of their head.
Step 1
The front dorsal fin is placed at the top of the body in this part of the tutorial. I recommend working on your sketch gradually; it’s all too easy to get carried away with a single part and lose control over the overall picture.
Step 2
Some fish, including our trout, lack back dorsal fins entirely; instead, they have an adipose fin, which is a small structure without the spikes.
Step 4
Its shape is more akin to a triangle with rounded edges than a straight line, as is the case with this species.
Step 6
It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to cram too much information into your drawing; just be creative and have fun with it!
Step 10
Fill the shapes with a pattern of paired lines, with the gaps between the lines being as small as possible and the gaps between each pair of lines being as small as possible.
Step 1
I darken the pupil with the HB pencil, leaving the highlights, and graphite hatch the top of the head.
Step 2
To draw fish spots, I use HB and 3B pencils. I don’t draw spots on the fish’s belly, and the thin line that runs through the center of the body is also left untouched, giving the fish a natural, realistic appearance. The spots vary in size and intensity, so use your imagination.
Step 3
I use a 3B graphite pencil to apply hatching hatching to the upper part of a fish. A combination of shading techniques, such as long horizontal lines that repeat the direction of the fish’s body and curved contour hatches, works well for creating a realistic effect.
Step 4
Make sure the details, such as the gill covers and fins, are highlighted; the drawing should be sufficiently contrasted.
Your Artwork Is Complete
I wish you much inspiration; just draw, experiment, and have fun! You’ve created a beautiful drawing of a rainbow trout and learned more about the process of designing a typical fish.
