Question: How To Draw A Sunrise With Colored Pencils?

How to Draw a Sunrise Landscape with Water Soluble Colored Pencils – Part 1

In the tutorial below, I’ll demonstrate a combination of traditional dry and wet media techniques, and in my next article, I’ll show the final steps for completing an original colored pencil drawing.

Step 1: Filling in the sky

I used pencils and a medium-sized sable flat brush dampened with clean water, applying only one or two strokes to each area because more strokes tend to remove or “pull up” color.

Step 2: Adding trees and sunbeams

I used Handi-Tak to create “ragged” and blurred edges for the fog and sunbeams by moistening the pencil tip with water and tapping color into place.

Step 3: Drawing the meadow

In the meadow, I used light pressure and the side of the pencil to apply Olive Green Yellowish, sweeping open and sweeping from one side to the other in a random pattern. In the background, I used light pressure to glaze the horse and other parts of the background.

Step 4: Adding another layer of color

I added Helioblue Reddish and Permanent Green Olive after working with Olive Green Yellowish to create a nearly black foreground with a greenish cast. I used medium pressure and worked horizontally and vertically to create a solid band of color.

Step 5: Filling in foreground objects

I used Black, Olive Green Yellowish, Deep Cobalt Green, Helioblue Reddish, Grass Green, and Van Dyke Brown for the pine trees, and a damp brush on the grass and pines for the grass.
