FAQ: How To Draw A Simple Cowboy Hat?

How to Draw a Cowboy Hat — Step by Step Guide

The cowboy hat is a hat with a high crown and a broad, typically folded brim that has been in style since 1865 and never goes out of style. All you need is a piece of paper and your favorite drawing tool to get started drawing!

Step 1

To draw a cowboy hat, begin at the top and work your way down; the outline should have the shape of a downward slope, as shown in the illustration. Draw a line forming the right edge of the crown, and then work your way down from there.

Step 2 — Create an Rough Sketch of the Crown

Draw a second downward slope line right beside the first, ensuring that the lines at the top of the crown overlap, creating a crease. This will help your cowboy hat appear more realistic and like a man wearing a cowboy hat.

Step 3 — Next, Refine the Outline of the Crown

Draw a curved horizontal line at the bottom, connecting both end-points of the lines we drew in the previous steps, to close off the figure of the crown and complete the outline. The crown of your cowboy hat should now be complete after completing this step.

Step 4 — Then, Add a Hatband for Decoration

At the bottom of the crown, draw a slightly curved horizontal line, following the natural shape of the outline; this will be the band or piece of fabric that will surround the entire crown.

Step 5 — Afterwards, Draw the Half of the Brim

Draw a curved line from the left side of the crown to the top of the brim, which should form a semi-circle shape when drawn correctly, as shown in the illustration below.

Step 6 — Now, Extend the Outline of the Brim

Step 2: Draw an upward diagonal line from the bottom of the monarch’s crown to the opposite side of the monarch’s crown.

Step 7 — Add a Roll on the Surface of the Brim

Close off the brim of your cowboy hat with a downward curve back to the left side, overlapping the end point of this line within the brim to create a realistic-looking fold that will give it an authentic cowboy look.

Step 8 — Add Details and Textures on the Hat

Draw a few curved lines near the brim’s edge, following its outline, to add texture to the cowboy hat’s material. Remember, the lighter and thinner the stroke, the more realistic it will appear; the trick is to avoid pressing down too hard with your pencil.

Step 9 — Add Decorative Patterns on the Hat

Imagine that you’re designing your own one-of-a-kind cowboy hat, with the freedom to choose your own colors and create a unique palette. While you’re at it, why not try experimenting with different coloring materials as well? Have fun experimenting with colors and watch as the cowboy hat comes to life!

Your Cowboy Hat Drawing is Complete!

Don’t worry if the cowboy hat isn’t exactly how you imagined it would be; just keep drawing until you’re satisfied with the results. Remember, practice makes perfect! We can’t wait to see your finished product.

You can paint a straw hat with any acrylic paint, spray paint, or other medium, but you must apply several light coats to avoid the hat becoming misshapen. I have successfully spray painted both straw hats and baskets with spray paints.
