How to Draw a Mermaid Tail – 3 Easy Steps ????✏️
Drawing a mermaid tail with a pencil is not difficult if you know how to do it. There are three simple ways to draw each part of the mermaid’s tail with a pencil, and I’ve included some sketches with step-by-step instructions below.
Drawing a mermaid tail step by step
The mermaid tail is made up of three parts: the tail, a fin, and mermaid scales, which I’ll show you how to draw in an easy manner below. It’s best to follow the steps in that order, but you can start with the fin if you prefer.
Drawing the Mermaid tail
To draw a mermaid tail, first decide which direction it should face; the top of the tail should be rounded, as this is where the mermaid’s torso begins; you can also draw side fins on the side of the tail if desired.
Drawing a mermaid tail curved to the left
Draw a long round line, changing the direction of the curve until you reach the bottom, then draw a line parallel to the other side upwards, closing the mermaid’s hips at the top.
Drawing a straight mermaid tail
Draw a rounded line leaning down, followed by a small triangle as the tail’s end, and optionally, side fins to make a mermaid look more human.
Drawing a mermaid tail curved to the right
The mermaid tail is similar to the first mermaid tail, but it’s mirrored, and it works well whether you’re drawing a mermaid from the front or facing right or left. Draw a round line about a third of the length you want the tail to be.
Drawing the mermaid fin
Here are three styles that you can use to quickly draw shark fins and experiment with different colors and patterns for different sharks.
Drawing round mermaid fins
To draw a fin, start by drawing a long bulbous line and then turning the direction around at the end. From there, repeat the process, but this time the other way around, to create the top of a fin and the base of two fins.
Drawing a serrated mermaid fin
Draw a round long line from the top to the bottom, following the shape of the outer line, with or without prongs. It looks a little like a bell on the outside, tapers at the bottom, and meets in the middle.
Drawing a pointy mermaid fin
The last fin is shaped like Arielle’s mermaid fin, and it has elements of both the first and second fins: on the outside, we draw a long round line, similar to the second fin, and on the inside, we change direction once, similar to the first.
Drawing the mermaid scales
Mermaids have round or pointed scales, but you can experiment with other shapes if you’re not sure what kind of mermaid you want to be.
Drawing round scales
To make them, simply draw a series of small semicircles with the sides extending upward, starting with slightly larger scales at the top and gradually reducing the scales row by row.
Drawing scattered round scales
By drawing individual clusters of scales with plenty of white space in between, you can see the shape of a mermaid’s tail; alternatively, you can just hint at the scales on the mermaid tail by using a variety of colors and black lines for each individual section.
Drawing pointed scales
Instead of semicircles, triangular points are used to shape the scales; as with round scales, it looks best if the scales get a little smaller towards the bottom and the rows are slightly offset.

What is Drawcember?
Every December, DC provides artists with an inspiration for a drawing for each day of the month; most of the inspirations are related to the holidays, such as a sled ride (2012) or a new year’s hat (2013).
What is MerMay?
MerMay is a monthly art challenge in which artists from all over the world draw mermaids. It begins at the beginning of May and runs until the end of the month; the challenge is to draw a mermaid every day during that time.
