Quick Answer: How To Draw A Ponytail From The Side?

How to Draw a Ponytail – Step by Step Guide

When drawing human characters, the hairstyle is just as important as the facial features, so we’ve created a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a ponytail, with 9 simple and quick steps, each accompanied by an illustration.

Step 1

When drawing an outline, remember to use light strokes and avoid pressing down too hard with your pencil; this will allow you to easily remove some parts of the outline later.

Step 2 — Create an Outline of the Character’s Head

At the top of your character’s head, draw a series of connected curved, pointed figures, making sure that each clump of hair in the bangs differs slightly in form and thickness. Don’t forget to erase the upper part of the head’s outline that overlaps within the hair.

Step 4 — Afterwards, Draw the Top of the Hair

Draw a curved line that encompasses the upper part of your character’s head, then draw a semicircle around the curved line we just drew, completing the top of your character’s head.

Step 5 — Draw the Hair Tie That Holds the Ponytail

Draw a smaller curved line for the character’s hair at the bottom of their head. This is where the ponytail will emerge when we draw it in the next step.

Step 6 — Then, Draw the Top Part of the Ponytail

Draw a curved line emerging from the hair tie that we drew in the previous step. The higher the slope of the curve, the higher the ponytail.

Step 7 — Finalize the Structure of the Ponytail

We’ve drawn a wavy, medium-length ponytail in this illustration, but you can make it as short or as long as you want, and the hair can be straight, curly, or any other hairstyle you want!

Step 8 — Add Details and Texture All Over the Hair

When drawing hair, remember to use patterns and details to add texture and make it look realistic, and remember to curve the streaks on the bangs and top of the head towards the ponytail.

Step 9 — Now, Add Streaks of Hair on the Ponytail

Rep the previous step, but this time make the streaks of hair the same shape as the ponytail. Finally, it’s time for the most exciting part: choosing colors and coloring the hair. Feel free to use any color you want!
