Be ready to undo (Ctrl+z), and draw without worry
Draw your strokes from joint to joint, such as shoulders to elbows and elbows to wrists, to create supple line art that captures the characteristics of each body part.
Trace and then tidy up
You don’t have to draw neat lines in a single stroke; after drawing the same line a few times, you can use the eraser tool to tidy it up; if you think you’ve got a good draft from the start, you can copy it and use the same method to tidy it up.
Use Different Thicknesses for Pen Tools
Do all of the lines in your line art have the same thickness?
Thick lines for outlines and the foreground
Use thick lines for parts of the body that you want to show more, such as the hands in the above image, to give your line a three-dimensional look. This technique will allow you to give your lines personality without using colors or shading.
Vary line thickness for clothing wrinkles depending on the material
To express what your characters are wearing through their clothing, use thin, light lines for soft materials like T-shirts and blouses, and thick brushes and firm lines for harder materials like leather jackets and suits.
Use Darker Lines for Shadows and Intersections
Because the ink tends to pool in areas with intersecting lines when using dip pens, you can give your line art a more pen-and-paper look by darkening the intersections in digital art as well. This will also help in evoking a three-dimensional look.
The higher the value, the smoother the line; if you’re using Adobe Photoshop CC, you can get a similar effect with a setting called Smoothness; it’s best to experiment and find your preferred value.
Draw Using Vectors
Raster images are images made up of a group of pixels that you see on computers. Vector layers create dots called control points on lines that allow you to draw vector images that are easy to edit and don’t degrade when scaled up.
Rotate the Canvas
In digital art, you can rotate the canvas to get a better angle; it’s easier to draw from top to bottom or left to right (if you’re right-handed), and it’s even easier to rotate a smartphone or tablet PC.
Place a piece of paper on the pen tablet!
If you’re used to drawing with pencils or dipped pens, this may improve your drawing, but it will also wear down your pen due to the increased friction between the pen tablet and the pen. Keep an eye on how much contact you’re making with each other.
1. Place your pen tablet directly in front of the screen!
When drawing, always place your pen tablet directly in front of the screen; even if you think it’s in the right place, your elbow may move it around while you’re drawing, so check the position of the pen tablet before drawing if you’re uncomfortable.
2. Set the drawing area of the pen tablet to the aspect ratio of the monitor.
If your monitor’s aspect ratio is 16:9, your pen tablet’s drawing area should be the same size; if the tablet is too big and your strokes become too long, try shrinking them; this will make your strokes smaller and easier to draw.
