How to Draw Anime Male Hair Step by Step

This tutorial demonstrates how to draw male anime and manga hair in nine different styles, each with step-by-step drawing instructions and examples. Anime male hairstyles drawing While there are many different styles of male anime hair, this tutorial focuses on the more common and generic styles that you are likely to see in many shows and manga.

Drawing “Buzz Cut” Male Anime Hair

While this “hairstyle” has very little hair, it’s a good one to start with because it shows the hairline, which is important when drawing the other styles. Before drawing the hair, draw the head as shown in the step-by-step example above.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the “Buzz Cut”

The front of the “buzz cut” will be part of the hairline, which can be drawn with just two large curves that create a bottom pointing tip slightly below the top of the head. Please note that the hairline can vary in shape and position in both real people and anime characters.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the “Buzz Cut”

Add another set of curves to the sides of the hairline, a good distance above the ears, that join with the first set. Anime buzz cut male hair sides drawing

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the “Buzz Cut”

Finally, draw the top/back part of the “buzz cut” hair. Depending on how short you want the hair to be, you can skip this step. If the hair is almost completely shaved, you can just use the outline of the head to define it’s top. In this case, the hair will be slightly longer, so it will be drawn with just a little bit of volume.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

To finish the line drawing, erase the top part of the head that should be covered by the hair and then go over it with a darker stroke.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

You can also add some basic fill/shading to the hair to make it more visible. Anime buzz cut male hair drawing

Drawing Short Male Anime Hair

Short anime hair is drawn in smaller clumps than longer hair because short hairs can’t reach far enough to join into a large clump. Before drawing the hair, draw the head with an outline of the hairline (based on the first example of the tutorial).

Step 1- Draw the Front of the Short Hair

Draw the front section of the short hair with the base of the clumps fairly close to the hairline in an anime short male hair front drawing.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Short Hair

Anime short male hair sides drawing Draw the side clumps close to the hair line in the same way as the “front hair.”

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Short Hair

Finally, draw the back/top section of the hair u201cfanning outu201d around the head, with the clumps leaning slightly downwards rather than projecting directly away from the head like sun rays.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

After you’ve finished drawing the three parts of the hair, erase the hairline and the sections of the head that are covered by it, and go over your drawing with darker lines.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

Drawing Medium Length Male Anime Hair

Step-by-step instructions for drawing anime male hair The medium length hair (or some variation of it) is probably one of the most generic hairstyles in anime and manga, and it’s very common among the “average guy” protagonists. Draw an outline of the head along with the hairline before drawing the hair.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Medium Length Hair

Draw the front of the hair in fairly large clumps that start around the top of the head and go down well past the hairline, with the clump/clumps in the middle being slightly longer than the sides.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Medium Length Hair

Draw the side sections of the anime male hair with just a few long clumps each, starting at the top of the head and going down to the bottom of the ears.

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Medium Length Hair

Finally, add the top/back section of the hair, which should have a bit of a “roof like” shape on the upper part where the hair slopes down and then transitions into clumps, as well as some clumps sticking out from below the ears.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

Anime male hair line drawing Erase the hair-covered areas of the hairline and head, then go over your drawing with darker lines.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

After you’ve completed the line drawing, you can add some basic shading, as shown in the example above.

Drawing Medium-Long Male Anime Hair

Start by drawing an outline of the head and the hairline, which is similar to the previous example but slightly longer. One common feature of this hairstyle is that the portions that would cover the eyes are often swept to the sides, with one large chunk going down the middle of the face to around the tip of the nose.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Medium Long Hair

Begin drawing the actual hair by adding the part that runs down the middle of the face, which can start around the top of the head and go down to around the tip of the nose (if it was shown). Draw this part as two combined clumps that curve in opposite directions and overlap, forming a bit of an “x” shape near their bottom as they overlap.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Medium Long Hair

Though this “side hair” also grabs parts of the front section of the hair, it’s still easier to simply split it up as shown in the example. Anime medium long male hair sides drawing Add the side parts of the hair as two large curved shapes that somewhat “hug” the head and split into smaller clumps towards their ends.

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Medium Long Hair

To show that the hair is fairly long, leave a good amount of distance between most of the clumps in the upper part, with only a few shorter clumps sticking out near the very top. Anime medium long male hair back and top drawing

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

After finishing the light line drawing, erase the hairline/parts of the head covered by the hair and go over everything with a darker stroke.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

You can also add some basic shading, as shown above, to the anime medium long male hair drawing.

Drawing Combed Male Anime Hair

Step-by-step drawing of anime combed male hair As the title suggests, this example features hair that appears to be partially combed. Begin by drawing the head and hairline as shown above.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Combed Hair

Draw the u201cfront hairu201d in medium-sized clumps that are all swept to one side, while also trying to draw each individual clump pointing in a slightly different direction.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Combed Hair

To avoid making the hair look too neat, draw the sides slightly messy, as in the above example, or draw them more like the hair in the “medium length example.” Generally, the fewer clumps you draw and the more they point in the same direction, the neater the hair or part of the hair will look.

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Combed Hair

Add the back/top portion of the hair in pretty much two main curves going from one side of the top of the head to the other. Its overall shape should somewhat hug the head/face getting closer to it the more it goes down. You can also add a few small clumps at the very bottom and slightly above the ears.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

You can also apply some basic shading to the hair to make it stand out a little bit more, as shown above. Anime combed male hair drawing

Drawing Combed Back Male Anime Hair

Step-by-step drawing of anime combed back male hair The hairline is especially important for the combed back hair because it is nearly fully visible. Begin the drawing by outlining the shape of the head and placing the hairline.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Combed Back Hair

Draw the front section of the combed back male hair as a series of little “teeth like” shapes running along the hairline, as opposed to the “buzz cut,” where you could simply use the hairline itself as the “front of the hair.” The reason for drawing the “teeth” is because the hair in this example is much longer and these teeth resemble teeth.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Combed Back Hair

Anime combed back male hair sides drawing You can pretty much trace the hairline and connect it to the front section’s “teeth” for the sides of the hair.

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Combed Back Hair

When drawing these bumps, try to position them in such a way that their combined shape has a consistent flow to it. This means that you don’t get one part that is very close to the head and one that is very far away.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

Draw some curved (or wave-like) lines in between the hair bumps/clumps of the back/top section and the u201cteethu201d of the front section, as shown in the image. You can also add a tiny clump of hair (or a pair of clumps) that hangs down around the upper middle of the hairline, as shown in the image.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

Finally, as shown above, add some basic shading to the hair. Anime combed back male hair drawing

Drawing Long Male Anime Hair

Anime long male hair drawing step by step Some long male hairstyles can be drawn similarly to female hairstyles, but the combed back long hair seen here is more common in males. Draw the head and hairline before beginning the hair.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Long Hair

Draw little “teeth like” shapes along the hairline for the front section of the anime long male hair, similar to the previous example of the “combed back hair.” The teeth will be just a tad smaller and more numerous than in the previous example.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Long Hair

Anime long male hair front and sides drawing Draw the side sections in the same way as the u201ccombed backu201d hair, tracing the hairline and joining up with the u201cteeth.u201d

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Long Hair

Draw the back/top section of the hair tracing the shape of the upper part of the head some distance away from it, then starting to “fan out” more around the top of the ears. Inside the outline of the back/top shape draw a pair of lines going from the ears to the shoulders to help define the volume of that part of the hair.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

To finish the line drawing of the u201clongu201d hairstyle, erase the hairline and the parts of the head covered by the hair. Next, erase part of the hairline and draw in a large clump of hair hanging down along the middle of the face. This is optional, but it can make the hairstyle look a little more interesting.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

To finish, add some basic shading like in the example above. Anime long male hair drawing

Drawing “One Eye Covered” Male Anime Hair

Step-by-step drawing of anime male hair over one eye In this style, the hair’s “balance” is shifted to one side of the head, covering one eye; first, outline the head and hairline.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the “Over One Eye” Hair

The front section of this anime male hairstyle will be very large and long, and you can think of it as being split into two main sets of clumps, one smaller and one much larger (covering the eye), which you can draw starting from around the top of the head. Draw the clumps on the “covered side” generally larger and longer.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the “Over One Eye” Hair

The “side hair” clumps in this particular hairstyle are pretty much merged with the front section, so draw them as sort of extensions of their side of the “front hair.” Anime male hair over one eye sides drawing

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the “Over One Eye” Hair

Draw the back/top part of the hair hugging the head (some distance away from it). You can add some small clumps to the main shape around the top and side areas. Draw the very bottom part of the hair (below the ears) in large and fairly long clumps to give it a slightly more messy/stuck together look.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

To finish the line drawing, first erase the hairline and parts of the head covered by the hair, then trace over your drawing with darkened lines.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

You can add some very basic shading to the anime male hair over one eye drawing, as shown above.

Drawing “Spiky” Male Anime Hair

Step-by-step instructions for drawing an anime spiky male hairstyle This “spiky” hairstyle is shaped like a flame and is sometimes used to emphasize a character’s “fiery” personality. Begin by outlining the head and hairline as shown in the first step above.

Step 1 – Draw the Front of the Spiky Hair

Draw the front section of the hair with small clumps that start around the middle tip of the hairline and go downwards to the sides in an anime spiky male hair front drawing.

Step 2 – Draw the Sides of the Spiky Hair

Draw a few tiny clumps of u201cside hairu201d in the style of an anime spiky male.

Step 3 – Draw the Top/Back of the Spiky Hair

Anime spiky male hair back and top drawing As previously stated, the back/top parts of this hairstyle will have a combined shape that resembles a flame. To create the flame shape, start drawing the hair clumps smaller and shorter above the ears and gradually get larger and longer as they go up to the top of the head.

Step 4 – Finish the Line Drawing

Finish the line drawing by erasing the hairline and the part of the head covered by the hair, then going over it with darker lines.

Step 5 – Add Some Shading

You can also add some very simple shading, as shown in the example above. Anime spiky male hair drawing

Why is drawing hair so hard?

Hair is difficult to draw because what we see differs from what we know; you can’t just draw all the hairs as lines because that’s not what we see when we look at hair; instead, what we see must be simplified to lines and shades, which can be done in a variety of ways.
