FAQ: How To Draw Chemical Structures On Word?

Draw chemical structure of any molecule using this free Ms Word add-in/plugin.

Microsoft Word is the best tool for writing and formatting academic text, but it doesn’t support drawing complex chemical structures out of the box. Chem4Word adds support for entering and editing chemistry symbols, diagrams, and formulas using an intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI).

The open source Chem4Word project was assigned to the Outercurve Foundation in February 2011. It is a chemistry-aware add-in for Microsoft Word that is sponsored and supported by the.NET Foundation and Microsoft Research.

Features of Chem4Word

The Chem4Word add-in saves chemical structures as Custom XML Parts and renders them using Drawing ML inside a Custom Control. When you edit a chemistry structure and save the results, all of its linked visualizations are updated as well, allowing you to copy drawings to other documents.

Microsoft Office 2010, Office 2013, or Office 2016 are required to run this plugin. Windows 7 or later operating systems must have the latest Windows updates installed. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Framework 4.5.2 (free download from www.Microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=42642, may require a windows restart).

Installation Procedure

If you follow all of the steps correctly, you should see Chemistry Ribbon in Ms Word. Download the Chem4Word plugin for free here. Run Chem4Word-Setup.exe: This will automatically download and install the required software, such as Visual Studio Tool for Office Runtime.

Navigate chemical structure

If the molecule you want to draw is available offline in this plugin’s database, you can use it right away. It allows you to draw any chemical symbol from an easy to use and intuitive GUI.

Import chemical structure

You can import structure from PubChem, ChEBI, and Opsin databases if the molecule you want to draw is not available in the offline database / Navigate panel. I just tried to draw chemical structure of ” sildenafil citrate ” molecule and got it on the fly using import option.

This means you’ll never have to waste time drawing chemical structures with a magnifying glass or a ruler, or writing chemistry articles.

Which plugin can be used to draw chemical structures in MS Word?

To draw a chemical structure, go to the “Chemistry tab” and select “draw, navigate, or import.”

How do you name chemical structures?

In summary, the compound’s name is written with the substituents in alphabetical order, then the base name (derived from the number of carbons in the parent chain), with commas between numbers and dashes between letters and numbers, and no spaces between letters and numbers.

How do you name a formula?

The first element in the formula is simply listed by its name, while the second element is named by taking the stem of the element name and adding the suffix -ide. The number of atoms in a molecule is specified using a system of numerical prefixes.

What is the chemical formula of alcohol?

The structural formula of ethanol, C2H5OH, provides a little more detail, indicating that there is an hydroxyl group (-OH) at the end of the 2-carbon chain (Figure 1.1).
