Five design tips for creating your own D&D character – Wacom Americas’ Blog
Many of us are finding different ways to keep ourselves occupied during the COVID-19 global pandemic, and online tabletop games have exploded in popularity. Fantasy artist Kiri u00d8stergaard Leonard shares five tips for creating a badass character with the Wacom One.
1. Give yourself permission to be messy
Allow yourself to be messy in the sketching phase; be messy, explore; don’t worry about getting the exact lines down. I want to have rough gesture lines and rough proportions of the character when I first start out.
2. Use body language to express the character’s personality
I’m trying to convey that this character is young, friendly, and approachable in the drawing by having her arm down by her side rather than holding the bow up and ready to shoot; if it were a more aggressive character, I’d use a different pose.
3. Use the outfit/gear/items to express the character’s personality and history
If you’re drawing a full-body character, use this tip to emphasize their hairstyle, facial expression, and features instead; small outfit choices help to inform the viewer about the character’s personality; I modeled my character’s legwarmers after Pippi Longstocking stockings.
4. The life of the character is in the face, so spend the most time here.
Make sure to pay attention to the face’s details and layers, as well as make-up artists’ reference packs; the eyes and brows are particularly important.
5. Use the colors to express their personality.
When coloring a sketch, I create a layer beneath it that I fill with the base colors, so I can always refer back to my drawing on the sketch layer. I hope you found these tips helpful, and have fun painting your D.
