How to Draw A Train – A Step by Step Guide

Here’s how to use a top-level artist’s drawing kit to learn how to draw a train.

Step 1

How to Draw a Train: Start with the front of the train and use a lot of straight lines to create the locomotive; then, as shown in the reference image, draw a flat shape on top of that; there will be no bottom because we’ll draw that later in this guide.

Step 2 – Next, draw some wheels for the train

We’ll draw some wheels in this step of your train drawing because a train wouldn’t get very far without them. This should be a very simple step, as all you have to do is draw two circles with a line between them.

Step 3 – Now, draw the chimney and wheel details

To start the chimney, simply draw two shirt lines coming up from the front of the train. Many trains run on coal power, and they need a chimney to expel the smoke that is produced when using this fuel source.

Step 4 – Next, draw a door onto the front of the train

Draw a simple train with two lines running vertically and horizontally across the top and bottom of the train, a tiny circle for the door handle, and a rectangle for the inside of the locomotive’s caboose.

Step 5 – Draw the next section of the train

The next carriage will be drawn the next time we look at how to draw a train; to do so, simply draw a rectangle trailing behind the front of the train and two short lines connecting them, as well as two wheels that are identical to the ones you drew onto the first section.

Step 6 – Next, draw another carriage

Simply duplicate the carriage you just drew to have it trailing behind the train, then repeat for the next carriage.

Step 7 – Draw the track beneath the train

If you have a ruler, step 7 of our guide on how to draw a train will be much easier: carefully draw a horizontal line beneath the train so that it touches the wheels, and then draw the next two lines closely together.

Step 8 – Draw the smoke coming from the chimney with any final details

Draw a large plume of billowing smoke billowing from a train’s chimney, and then add any additional details to your train drawing, such as windows with passengers looking through them or a background to show where your train is traveling.

Step 9 – Now finish off your train with some color

This is the step where you can kick back, relax, and have some fun with your colors; trains can come in any color you can imagine, so you have a lot of options here! You can make the colors bright and vibrant, darker and more muted, or a combination of both.
