How to Draw Roses | An Easy and Complete Step-by-Step Guide
Gigi Chen, a painter and art instructor, demonstrates the basics of drawing a rose in graphite and colored pencil in this step-by-step demonstration. Be sure to brush up on your skills with 0 Drawing a Rose in Colored Pencil (Including the Leaves and Stems!).
Step 1 — What Pencil to Choose & A Light Touch
Beginning with the basic outline of the bloom, use a dull pencil such as a 2H or 3H to sketch out basic shapes, and keep a kneaded eraser handy to adjust the shape as you go through the process.
Step 2 — Small, Tight Petals First
Start with small tight petals fitting into the center guide, remembering that this is only a sketch and that details will be added later; for now, this is just an early concept.
Step 3 — C’s and D’s
Petals do not form neat straight rows or grow in patterns; instead, they alternately overlap, becoming larger and wider as we move away from the center.
Step 6 — The Addition of Color
After the base sketch is complete, use a sharpened red pencil to emphasize the anatomy of the petals and add details and outlines, starting from the center and working outwards to emphasize the shape and size of the flower’s petals.
Step 7 — Create Character
Let’s add some finishing touches as we rework the sketch. Rose petals have bends and grow unevenly, so use a combination of straight and curvy lines to give each petal some personality – Jodie Stimpson, on how to draw rose petals.
Step 8 — What’s In a Petal
Each petal has its own personality and can even appear to age at its own rate; some are perfectly straight, others have rounded corners, and still others have small rips and tears.
Step 9 — Variations On and On
It’s as simple as that to learn how to draw roses. A lot can be conveyed with a seemingly simple line drawing, and variation creates volume and movement. Repeat these steps across a whole page of your sketchbook for a rose extravaganza.
