FAQ: How To Draw A Cat With Pencil?

How to Draw a Realistic Cat Step-by-step | Udemy Blog

To improve your drawing skills, draw a cat in three stages using simple lines and shapes as a guide. You can also use a blending stump to add shading and form to make your cat look more realistic.

Get familiar with the basics of cat anatomy

If you want to learn how to draw cats, study their anatomy by studying real-life cats and learning more about their positions, features, and poses. You can also study their bone and muscle structure by looking at cat anatomy drawings and books.

Start with a quick stick-figure sketch

When learning to draw, scribble gesture drawing is the best place to start because it’s all about capturing the subject’s major energy and getting to know it. Simply look at the drawing and ask yourself where the line is vertical, horizontal, or on an angle.

Gather your art materials

You will only need a pencil and paper to draw your cat; however, if you want to shade your cat’s face, you will need additional art materials, which you can purchase for about u00c232.50 each (or reusable poster putty tack) from an art or craft store.

Step 1: Draw a vertical line

Draw a vertical line of any length you want (I went with seven inches), either with a ruler or by using the motion of your shoulder and a stiff wrist to guide you. Measure each of your four divisions to ensure they are the same length.

Step 2: Draw a large oval for the body

The first shape to draw for your cat’s body is a large oval, which should begin at the beginning of the second tab down from the top and end a little way up from the bottom.

Step 3: Draw a circle for the cat head

Draw a horizontal guideline to help you create the width on each side of the vertical line, or make a circle that is two inches long and two inches wide to approximate the width of your cat head.

Step 4: Draw the cat ears as two triangle shapes

Draw two triangles on each side of the head for the cat ears, then finish each triangle by drawing a diagonal line down from the tip of the triangle ear shape to meet the circle, creating a triangle on each side of the head for the cat ears.

Step 5: Draw ovals for the 4 cat paws

For the two front leg paws, draw two smaller ovals at the base of the circle, a little further apart than the front ones. This will give them the appearance of being further back in the distance from each other than the front ones.

Step 7: Draw the shapes for your cat nose, eyes, and mouth

For the cat nose, draw a small upside-down triangle and one angled line on each side of the top of the nose to travel upwards. For now, the cat eyes are added as small circles, spacing them a little apart from one another using the angles as a guide.

Step 8: Draw the outline curves on the face, limbs, and body

In this step, you’ll add the outline to your entire cat, paying attention to where you need to draw inside the shape and where you need to draw outside the shape. Ask yourself what the curve or angle is really doing, then record it by drawing it onto your page. Tip: Keep the drawing you’re copying from parallel to your drawing. I call this the Artist’s Language, and it really works.

Step 10: Draw the fur outline

Always create your fur in the direction of the animal’s underlying body; some strokes will be curved, while others will be slightly more straight; always follow the animal’s body lines.

Step 11: Shade the body

For this step, all you’ll need is a paper stump and some graphite, which you can use to pull back and blend parts of the cat’s fur.

Finishing up and planning your next project

Your cat is finished once you are satisfied with all of your blending; this is a process you can repeat several times so that you can draw your cat from memory at any time. If you want to learn more about how to draw and shade using professional methods, check out my course.
