3 Tips for Drawing Clouds

A reader asked for tips on how to draw clouds, so instead of describing specific steps, I decided to share three tips for drawing clouds. If you’d like to see a step-by-step tutorial featuring clouds, let me know in the comments below.

The Character of Clouds

Clouds come in a variety of shapes, densities, and appearances, and there are a variety of ways to draw them. My first tip is to think of clouds in the same way you would think of drawing a portrait: consider the character of the cloud, and then concentrate on drawing the character.

Cloud Mass

Cloud mass is determined by the number of water droplets in the cloud, as well as the amount of light it obscures. Because thin, wispy clouds let a lot of light through, there aren’t many shadows on them.

Start General, Work Toward Details

Start with basic values and gradually darken them when drawing clouds; this rule applies to both shading color and drawing with graphite. Clouds with crisp edges are rare, so keep your edges soft for a natural look.

There’s no need to draw every cloud exactly the same on your paper unless you want to draw hyper-realistic clouds, and there’s no need to make a separate line drawing unless you want to.

Those are My Top 3 Tips for Drawing Clouds

There’s a lot more to drawing clouds than what I’ve described here, but if you master these three tips, you’ll be well on your way to drawing realistic clouds. As I mentioned earlier, I’m considering doing a full-length tutorial on drawing clouds, so let me know if you’d like one.
