How to Draw a Chair — Step by Step Guide
Drawing a simple chair is a great way to practice and hone your artistic skills. We’ve put together a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a chair in 9 easy and simple steps, each with clear illustrations to serve as your visual guide.
Draw a vertical and horizontal line across your paper to create reference lines for your chair, which will ensure that your chair is perfectly aligned with the rest of the paper when you sit down.
Step 2 — Start With the Seat of the Chair
Draw one stile or back leg on the back left corner of the seat, which helps support and balance the chair. Don’t forget to draw the dimensions for each part of the chair.
Step 3 — Draw the Stile or the Back Leg
Take a step back from the edge of the seat and draw another stile or back leg in the same manner as the previous one, but this time the leg should extend all the way down the side of the chair rather than just partway down as in the previous example.
Step 4 — Next, Draw the Crest Rail
Draw a crest rail in between the stiles on the upper part of a chair; the crest rail is the carved or profiled top rail on the back legs that helps support our backs while we’re sitting down, allowing us to sit comfortably and comfortably.
Step 5 — Then, Draw the Lower Back Rail
Draw a rail that looks exactly like the one we drew in the previous step, then a second rail that supports our back, keeping in mind that the crest and lower back rails must be slightly apart. The rails allow us to sit comfortably while maintaining our body posture.
Step 6 — Draw the Front Legs of the Chair
To create a realistic three-dimensional effect, draw a leg for each of the three-legged chair’s front legs, keeping in mind that the front legs should appear slightly lower than the back legs. When drawn correctly, it should look exactly like the rear leg in the third step.
Step 7 — Now, Draw the Seat Rail on All Sides
Draw a seat on both visible sides of the chair (the front and the right side) beneath the seat, and a set rail below the seat. A set rail gives the chair more durability and allows it to carry more weight.
Step 8 — Complete All Four Legs of the Chair
To complete the set of legs, draw a back leg right underneath the seat on the back left side of the chair. And there you have it! Your chair drawing now has four complete legs!
Step 9 — Draw the Cross Stretcher Under the Chair
Chairs are made of a variety of materials, including wood, metal, acrylic, and other durable materials, and come in a variety of colors that vary greatly depending on the material. Feel free to color your chair drawing however you want.
