How to Draw Lion Face & Head Step by Step
This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to draw a lion’s face and head, from a basic shape sketch to a finished line drawing. If you’re drawing with pencil and paper, make light lines for the first steps of the drawing so you can easily erase them later.
Step 1 – Draw the Major Shapes of the Lion’s Face & Head
Draw a straight line through the middle of your drawing area, then an intersecting horizontal line. Project a set of lines from the large face circle to the bottom jaw half circle to act as snout construction lines.
Step 2 – Draw the Facial Features
Add cheek bone shapes on the sides, starting from the area around the outer corners of the eyes and curving inwards towards the nose, and erase some of the construction lines from the previous step. Draw the shape of the nose as shown above.
Step 3 – Refine Shape of the Face
Refine the outer construction lines of the lion’s face from step one to achieve a more precise shape of the lion’s head.
Step 4 – Draw the Smaller Details of the Face
Draw the bottom part of the mouth, with the outer corners “hanging down,” the pupil, reflection area, and upper shaded area inside the eye, as well as the upper and lower eyelid curves as shown in the example.
Step 5 – Add Some Basic Fill/Shading
You can begin sketching the lion’s face by filling in/shading the areas of the eyes, nose, and mouth, as shown in the example below, and then finishing the drawing by going over some of your light sketch lines with a more solid stroke.
Step 6 – Draw the Inner Mane & Chin Fur
To make it look natural, draw the inner part of the mane fur as well as the fur on the chin. You can pretty much indicate each little fur clump with just one or two lines, but try to make each clump of fur different shape, size, and length.
Step 7 – Draw the Mane
Draw the rest of the lion’s mane, with smaller clumps near the top and larger clumps near the bottom, where the fur is longer.
Step 8 – Draw the Whiskers
Draw a few rows of tiny black dots around the upper area of the lion’s mouth before drawing the whiskers. The whiskers should be thicker towards the base and thinner towards the outer tips, and they should be of varying lengths and curving in slightly different directions.
Conclusion
The face and head of a lion can be difficult to draw, but you can make it easier by breaking it down into more basic shapes first. For instructions on drawing a lion’s full body from the side view, see How to Draw a Lion Full Body Step by Step.
