How to draw realistic leaves
Leaves can easily become the most difficult part of a drawing or painting; however, there are only four surprisingly simple steps, and the end result will speak for itself. Embrace perfect imperfections.
1. PERFECTLY IMPERFECT.
The goal of realism isn’t to achieve perfection; every object in nature has its own distinct appearance; you can’t assume that by looking at one leaf, you’ll be able to draw all of the leaves of that plant; instead, pay attention to the differences between them and translate them into your drawings.
2. EXPLORE VARIETY.
The key to drawing a realistic leaf is to identify the correct leaf of the plant. Research the plant you’re going to draw and examine the leaves closely. Look for two main characteristics: STRUCTURE (simple or compound) and ARRANGEMENT (alternate or opposite).
3. ADD TEXTURE.
The farther away the veins are from the base of the leaf, the smaller and thinner they become. Some leaves have a smooth edge, like tulips, and some have a rough edge, like roses. How do you create a simple texture? Try experimenting with lost and found edges, and don’t forget the small imperfections like cuts, holes, and blemishes.
Adding a sense of three-dimensional space to any realistic drawing, not just of a plant, is easier than you think. First, explore different angles of the leaf from different angles. Some lines will turn out to be covered by an overlap. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and are practicing drawing your leaves.
